They will also be used starting this year by Superstock 1000 FIM Cup riders in the SC compound version

13 February 2012 – Abu Dhabi Yas Marina circuit: 440 brand new Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa tyres ready to devour the asphalt along with 28 Ducati 1199 Panigale bikes. Following the introduction of the new P Zero tyres at the end of January for the 2012 Formula 1™ season, just a few weeks later the boys from Pirelli return to the Yas Marina circuit in the United Arab Emirates capital, this time in support of the press launch for the new supersport Ducati, the 1199 Panigale, which will soon be available on the market with the new Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP (Sport Production) tyres as original equipment. The newest member of the Diablo family, introduced for the first time at EICMA 2011 in the first flagship Store Pzero Moda which opened last September in Milan, will shoe the Italian red fury in sizes of 120/70 ZR17 for the front and 200/55 ZR17 for the rear. They will also be exclusively used starting this year in the SC compound (Special Compound) version by Superstock 1000 FIM Cup riders.

There were two top notch testers at 1199 Panigale press launch going on this week: three time World Superbike Champion Troy Bayliss and Ducati Vehicle Technical Director Andrea Forni, both of whom were able to test the performance of the Diablo Supercorsa tyres in the race replica SP version, also adapted for daily street use, and the SC compound version which will be used this year by all the Superstock 1000 FIM Cup riders. Together with Pirelli riders and other Ducati testers, the two Ducati gurus rode lap after lap, fully enjoying the spectacular performance of the Diablo Supercorsa shod Panigale. ......

Feelfree Wintec: the tyre which ensures safety even during the coldest seasons.

Safety in every month of the year is now even more within reach for all scooter riders thanks to the introduction of new sizes for Feelfree Wintec, the first tyre conceived to allow scooter riders to use their two wheelers in every season, especially in the coldest months. In addition to the sizes already sold, now riders can also find sizes of 100/80-16 for the front and 120/80-16 for the rear on 150 cc scooters like the Honda SH150i, 110-70-16 for the front and 130/70-R16 for the rear on 300cc scooters like the Honda SH300i as well as front size 110/70-13 and rear 140/60-14 suited for scooters like the Piaggio MP3. With the expansion of the Feelfree Wintec range Metzeler confirms road safety as a priority element of its research and development activities, which are conducted alongside numerous sensitization initiatives in all major European countries.

Created in 2007 as a radial for maxi-scooters (Burgman 650 and Tmax 500), Feelfree Wintec quickly became the tyre of choice for the entire segment and made scooter use non-seasonal.
Feelfree Wintec was designed to provide the best possible performance in low temperatures and on wet road surfaces, but it guarantees the same reliable performance in hot weather and on dry surfaces as well. Its primary benefits are stability and handling, factors which give the rider a feeling of security and confidence.

The Feelfree Wintec tread design is the most visible application of Metzeler technology. The tread, characterised by siping, was designed to optimise the empty/full ratio of both front and rear tyres in order to maximise performance, especially in wet conditions, enhancing water drainage.
The sipes play a fundamental role because, breaking up the water plane, they provide better traction on wet surfaces (centre of the tread) and an excellent feeling of contact in bends (shoulders). The shape of the sipes was designed to ensure fast warm-up without making the tread excessively mobile.
Feelfree Wintec is made up of both a conventional structures (for sizes from 10" to 15") as well as radial structures (sizes from 14" to 16"). The conventional structures are made up of a carcass on which two or more layers of rubber textile material are overlaid, with different angles of inclination based on the technical construction requirements and the different desired speed indexes.

The radial versions associate the famous Metzeler 0° steel belt with a lightened carcass in order to increase ease of riding and handling at high speeds. This technology constitutes a Metzeler patent which the engineers have developed even further, introducing variations on the density of the steel cords in the various areas of the profile.
Feelfree Wintec has a "three zone A-B-A pattern" which is able to provide a larger tread area. “AB-A” represents the arrangement of the steel belt, tighter on the shoulder and less at the centre,
with a new optimised profile which ensures progressive performance, predictability and maximum riding precision.

The compound plays an important role and thanks to a specific study on the composition mix, Feelfree is able to provide exceptional grip in all weather conditions. A patented process with an appropriate mix of compounds allows the properties of three different polymers to be added, each of which glazes over at different temperatures. This new patented technology ensures grip on wet surfaces even in extremely cold temperatures (-10°C) and at the same time provides excellent physical strength. An appropriate hardness of the compound in wet conditions and high temperatures stems from a perfectly balanced mixture of components (Silica + Carbon Black) created specifically for this tyre. Metzeler has also applied "Cap & Base" technology: strategic reinforcing fibres under the soft compound with a perfect balance of flexibility and rigidity between tread and structure which ensure transfer of road stress from the tread to the carcass, improving stability.

Avon motorcycle shows a first look at Avon’s new 3D Ultra Supersport tyres, part of a new range to be launched early in 2012.

Avon Tyres is celebrating its centenary of making motorcycle tyres this year. It is currently the only manufacturer of road-going motorcycle tyres based in the UK.  Over the last century, famous motorcycle racers such as Geoff Duke, John Surtees, Mike Hailwood and Barry Sheene have raced and won on Avon Tyres. The firm has won 13 Supersport and four Production class championships on two wheels as well as Isle of Man TT victories on both three and two wheels.

DIABLO SUPERBIKE NEW SIZE

The new sizes of 100/70 R17 for the front and 125/70 R17 for the rear, for 2.5" and 3.5" rims respectively, are designed for 125cc and 250cc sport bikes and destined for the promising young riders of today who will become the key players of tomorrow

The legends of tomorrow are fuelled by their victories today and precisely for the purpose of following riders throughout every stage of their sports career, Pirelli has decided to broaden the Diablo Superbike range with new sizes of 100/70 R17 for the front and 125/70 R17 for the rear, for mounting on 2.5” and 3.5” rims respectively and use on 125cc and 250cc sport bikes.

These bikes are characteristically lightweight with small rims and a short wheelbase, which makes them agile and quick on direction changes. Compared to their bigger superbike siblings, they lack the necessary power coming out of tight turns since the average power these engines put out varies between 24 and 44 HP. This is why they privilege a cleaner and more precise riding style and their lightness allows them to maintain precise lines and high speeds while leaning over into turns. In the new "small sizes", the Diablo Superbike was designed specifically to cater to these particular characteristics, but without sacrificing the quality that has made the larger sizes used by champions so famous.

The profile of the new sizes is sculpted in such a way so as to guarantee great agility and rapid descent into a leaning position and the compound used is capable of optimising grip even when the contact surface diminishes. This means the rider has good braking in turns, maintaining a high speed throughout the lean, as well as being able to follow a line with extreme precision. In fact, the new Diablo Superbike sizes provide top notch Superbike performance while minimising the need for a specific set-up, so they can be easily managed even by less experienced riders. These tyres boast some key characteristics such as a reduced warm up time, being easier to bring up to temperature, better grip in high speed turns, extremely precise trajectory, no need for sophisticated suspension set-ups and therefore an overall predictable performance which boosts the rider’s confidence and feeling of grip.

Availability and the use of compounds is similar to the rest of the Diablo Superbike range: the front 100/70 R17 size will be available in the SC1 compound, while for the rear 125/70 R17 size riders will be able to choose from three versions: SC0 and SC1 exclusively for racing, and SC2 which is more suited for practice as it boasts slower and more even wear and can therefore be used for multiple sessions. Both of the slick versions, available from January 2012, will also be available from February 2012 in the rain version with the SCR1 compound.

Pirelli introduces the new 110/80-19 sizes for the front and 150/70-17 for the rear, specifically designed for high displacement enduro street bikes that have a strong off-road attitude programmed into their DNA.

Pirelli introduces new sizes of the Scorpion Rally tyre, 110/80-19 for the front and 150/70-17 for the rear, designed ad hoc for high displacement enduro street bikes like the BMW R 1200 GS and Yamaha XT1200Z Super Ténéré which, besides being the preferred type of touring vehicle, maintain a strong propensity for off-road in their DNA.

The new Scorpion Rally sizes were designed to guarantee excellent off-road performance including better traction, tear resistance and less wear on the knobs, thanks to Pirelli's racing experience with the 90/90-21 and 140/80-18 sizes. Nevertheless, the African deserts are far from our cities and in order to reach them long stretches of paved roads must be travelled. This is why the new Scorpion Rally sizes were also designed to provide high mileage and excellent road stability, even at high speeds and fully loaded. The rear tyre also boasts better traction while the front capably transmits feeling and safety to the rider.   

In order to ensure that the large enduro bikes enjoy the same performance that brought the Scorpion Rally to victory in the 2009 Dakar and, just a few weeks ago, to the Cross Country Rally 2011 world title with Portuguese rider Helder Rodriguez, the tread pattern for the new 110/80-19 front size maintains the same 4-5-4 layout of the blocks with a central prism. The 7.7 mm height of the knobs was chosen deliberately to optimise handling, directional stability on sand and soft terrain, and to increase the life of the tyre. The 150/70-17 rear size, on the other hand, has wider blocks with long transversal bridges designed to provide better traction on soft terrain and to reduce slides, so that the rider can have full confidence when leaning into turns.

The primary focus of structural development was to provide the rider with stability at high speeds, confidence and safety, especially on long range street and motorway trips. Stability at high speeds was achieved thanks to the use of a carcass with thick ply cords arranged with just the right angling to provide greater lateral rigidity, which helps to contrast the vibrations which are often associated with large enduro bikes at high speeds.

These structural characteristics of the carcass ply also guarantee a vertical rigidity which, together with the use of reinforcing elements for the tyre's bead, provide a balance between the carcass and the tread which is itself softer thanks to the knobs. The result of all this is a tyre with a well balanced and reliable performance capable of providing comfort on asphalt in spite of a knobby tread pattern.

The new Scorpion Rally sizes also have an innovative compound, developed with particular attention to the dual use of this tyre. In off road use, the compound is highly resistant to tearing, preventing cuts and ripping which would be even more dangerous when riding on asphalt. Great effort was also made regarding mileage: the tyre now has a longer lifetime and wears more evenly.

11 November 2011 – Pirelli announces the world premiere of the new Diablo Supercorsa, the Italian maker’s new tyre perfect for professional riders and motorcyclists who have a sporty riding style but love the racetrack as well. The newest member of the Diablo family is being presented in occasion of EICMA 2011 at the first flagship PZero Moda store opened this past September on the famed Corso Venezia in Milan. The Diablo Supercorsa will be initially produced in the 120/70ZR17 front and 200/55ZR17 rear and will be used in 2012 in the SC (Special Compound) version only by the riders of the Superstock 1000 FIM Cup and these same sizes will also be available in an SP (Sport Production) race replica version suitable for daily use on the road.

Pirelli will progressively introduce this new tyre, first in the racing world with the release of the compound version that will be used in the FIM Superstock 1000 FIM Cup starting next year and then to expand the available range at the end of 2012, introducing a broader range of racing sizes to extend use of the new tyre in various national championships where Pirelli now competes. Finally in early 2013, the road going race replica version will be made available in the common 180/55, 190/55 and 190/50 size for the rear.

The street version of the Diablo Supercorsa (SP) is a concentration of technology taken from the experience and racing heritage acquired by Pirelli in its role as sole supplier of the Superbike World Championship since 2004 and is a tyre for street use which offers performances typical of racing products for exclusive use on track, allowing the user a unique ultra-high performance product that can be used on the street or the track without the need to compromise.
First showcasing this tyre and its excellent qualities is Ducati who, also due to the close collaboration with Pirelli’s research and development center, has already selected the new Diablo Supercorsa in its street version (SP) to equip its all-new 1199 Panigale, adopting the same measures of the Superstock 1000 FIM Cup (120/70 and 200/55).

The new Diablo Supercorsa, compared to the previous version, has a rear profile calibrated with approximately 2 mm more side edge and 4 mm more diameter in the center for increased support under braking and to make riding more intuitive and precise in maintaining the line. The rear tyre has been completely revamped an improved upon in order to increase contact area, grip, the speed of lean-in and handling overall.

The structures and compounds of the Diablo Supercorsa, derived from its predecessor’s use in WSBK racing activities, optimize the performances instilled by the profiles. In particular, the 200/55ZR17 rear tyre is built with a high modulus carcass and features a dual-compound tread using new polymers to offer quick warm-up and a solid grip in all conditions. The result of this match between the two new profiles of the front and rear is an increased handling and agility overall.
The new dual-compound tread pattern of the race replica version is characterized by long longitudinal grooves which begin at the central area of the profile and reach the tyre shoulder to ensure the regularity of wear even during more severe use. The shoulder of the tyre remains 'naked', a distinctive line of Diablo, for sport use on the road which demands maximum grip.

Beyond these technological characteristics pointed out above, the new Diablo Supercorsa SP does not compromise the customizable ultra-modern and timeless look that has characterized the latest products presented in Pirelli’s Diablo range. The new Supercorsa also permits tyre customization through the application of special labels to dedicated areas on the sidewalls of the front and rear tyres made to accommodate the labels, which anyone can freely create on Pirelli’s website and have shipped directly their home (service currently available in Europe and Australia).

Bridgestone launches Battlax Hyper Sport S20 motorcycle tyre A premium sport tyre inspired by Bridgestone’s MotoGP technology.

Bridgestone has strengthened its motorcycle tyre line-up with the launch of a premium sport tyre: the Battlax Hyper Sport S20 for riders of high-powered machines from 600 to 1300 cc. Using the “S” (= Sport) symbol for the first time on a Battlax tyre, the premium S20 completes Bridgestone’s Hyper Sport product line-up that includes the Battlax BT-016 Pro and BT-016 amongst other sport specialists for road and track.

The development target for the S20 was to meet the demands of European sport riders for the highest handling performance in wet and dry on all types of roads and riding conditions: highway touring, winding country roads, city streets and track circuits. Bridgestone engineers turned to their MotoGP experience for the answers.
“Test results of the new S20 show that Bridgestone can take MotoGP technology and apply it to a road tyre. To date, the S20 is the closest production tyre to MotoGP and thus benefits more than any other from Bridgestone’s MotoGP successes” says Vincent Van Houtte, Manager Motorcycle Tyre Products, Bridgestone Europe.
Larger contact area at all angles

Compared to the BT-016 Pro, the S20 has superior handling on wet and dry, while maintaining excellent wear life performance. Bridgestone’s proven construction with Mono-Spiral Belt (MSB) and High Tensile Super Penetrated Cord (HTSPC) has been optimized to produce a larger ground contact patch at all riding angles, providing more grip in all conditions. At lower camber angles, this larger contact area improves the contact feel and adds ride comfort; at medium and higher angles, riders enjoy more cornering stability.
The S20 tread pattern is designed with grooves that straighten out in the centre of the tread, improving cornering performance when the angle is low, particularly at turn-in. On the front, the side grooves run up to the shoulder, providing better contact feels at high angles and stronger grip on wet and dry. On the rear, the wider grooves give confident grip in the wet.
"The S20’s large contact area and grip level come from its MotoGP genes. Sporty riders can tackle the angles with full confidence” says Dominique Plom, Assistant Manager, Field Engineer, Bridgestone Europe.
Immediate grip

The new compound with Silica Rich and Bridgestone’s proprietary NanoPro-TechTM polymer, which reduces heat build-up during tyre rotation, provides improved grip in the wet and at low temperatures. This gives confident grip right from the start during warm-up, without sacrificing mileage performance on front or rear.
The triple-layer compound (3LC) with an optimized segmentation of soft and harder compound has been applied on front and rear, improving dry grip as well as giving high stability in cornering and good mileage.

New wet grip benchmark
Test results versus Bridgestone’s BT-016 Pro tyre show that the new S20 delivers improved grip on dry roads, giving more confidence for cornering, and high-level sporty handling. On the track, riders can expect high cornering stability and faster lap times through better and more balanced grip on front and rear.
Bridgestone tests show that the S20 wet grip is even better than the BT-016 Pro, already the established standard in the wet. Results also show the high stability that comes from improved grip, with easy control in heavy rain conditions.
This high-level grip has been achieved without sacrificing mileage performance. Bridgestone tests confirm that the new S20 compound has excellent wear resistance, providing high mileage on front and rear tyres.

The new premium Battlax Hyper Sport S20 is available in Europe from January 2012 in 4 front sizes and 7 rear sizes.

New ContiSportAttack 2 Provides Agile and Precise Handling for Sports Motorbikes

Continental is pleased to present its new super-sports tire under the “Ready 2 attack” slogan. Available from January 2012 on, the ContiSportAttack 2 has been developed to meet the highest expectations in terms of handling and safety. With this new offering, the engineers at Continental – the leading European tire manufacturer – have set a new standard for the tire brand. The handling is so smooth that it even deals with fast cornering more precisely and at higher speed than ever before. A higher silica content in the tread compound makes the tire even safer on wet roads. And tire developers have made use of tried-and-tested Continental technologies, including Traction Skin, continuous compound and the Black Chili compound. The tire also offers an exceptionally safe and short break-in periods, good grip, optimum feedback in critical situations, high mileage, and homogenous driving characteristics right up to its wear limit. The front and rear wheel tires are designed to also give the rider good control when braking and accelerating out of curves.

With these characteristics, Continental is able to add a new tire to its super-sports product range that responds to the high performance expectations that bikers place on their motorbikes and tires. Continental has original equipment releases – among others for the new 2012 BMW S 1000 RR – to demonstrate the high standard of the new ContiSportAttack 2. The super-sports tire is manufactured in the Korbach tire plant in Hesse, Germany, and is available in three dimensions for the front wheel and five for the rear.

THE EU INTRODUCE A NEW TYRE LABEL - NOT FOR MOTORCYCLE TYRES

In order to provide standardised information on fuel efficiency, wet grip and external rolling noise, the European Union is to introduce a compulsory label for all new tyres. By November 2012 all relevant new tyres sold in Europe must carry this EU label.
The label is intended to give end-users some essential information to help them when choosing new tyres.

Exemptions from labelling are motorcycle tyres   ...re-treaded tyres, 4WD and all-terrain tyres, Racing/sports car tires, Tyres for cars made before 1 Oct 1990
