FOUR MICHELIN MEN ON TOP AT JEREZ
26.02.2008

FOUR MICHELIN MEN ON TOP AT JEREZ

Michelin riders topped the timesheets during this penultimate test session at Jerez, with the fastest four riders and five riders in the first top six. 2006 World Champion Nicky Hayden (Repsol Honda RC212V-Michelin) was the fastest man over the three days, recording his best lap on qualifiers at the end of the final day, his best lap half a second inside the pole position pace at last year’s Spanish GP. The weather was very changeable throughout the three days with cool, windy and rainy conditions.

Hayden was four tenths ahead of impressive MotoGP rookies Jorge Lorenzo (Fiat Yamaha Team YZR-M1-Michelin) and Andrea Dovizioso (JiR Team Scot Honda RC212V-Michelin), while new Michelin man Randy de Puniet (Honda LCR RC212V-Michelin) was fourth. Colin Edwards (Yamaha Tech 3 YZR-M1-Michelin) was sixth and James Toseland (Yamaha Tech 3 YZR-M1-Michelin) seventh. As is usual, most riders used qualifying tyres to set their fastest laps during the tests, though Michelin’s seven MotoGP riders also did some impressive runs in race trim.

“This test has been quite good for us,” said Jean-Philippe Weber, Michelin’s director of motorcycle racing. “We already had some useful information from the first day in dry conditions and yesterday we were able to do some good work with wets. Today we had to confirm a few things we tested on the first day and we had some new tyres to tests that we hadn’t had time to test because of the bad weather. We now have a good working basis with our latest family of tyres and I think all our teams now have a clear direction for race tyres, so everybody did a good job here. ................

MOTORCYCLE TYRE SUPPLIERS TO DISCUSS MOTOGP RULES
02.09.2007

Dorna boss Carmelo Ezpeleta is to chair a meeting at Misano this afternoon between the three tyre suppliers in MotoGP to hear thoughts and comments about the 2007-introduced tyre restriction rule.

Tyre manufacturers Michelin, Bridgestone and Dunlop this year are restricted to 31 tyres for each rider at each race, but many feel that after five years of 990cc regulations, this first year with the 800cc formula has seen races 'not so close and with less spectacle' as before.

Casey Stoner and his Bridgestone-shod Ducati are the run away leaders of the MotoGP championship this season with a 60-point lead with six races remaining and 150 points still in play. Second in the title chase are Valentino Rossi and Dani Pedrosa, both on Michelin tyres.

"We can't go on like this," Ezpeleta was quoted as saying by Gazzetta dello Sport.

"The tyre manufacturers made this agreement, so they must find the solution. Either they find a new agreement themselves, otherwise I'll find it for them.

"Our distinctive mark is the spectacle on the track, which has been lacking in the last races.

"Bridgestone can't refuse to find a deal, otherwise Michelin will leave and the Japanese would be left all alone. That's not something they want."

There is a paddock ground swell from Michelin teams of late, complaining the rule is not fair, citing a lack of spectacle in the racing at the last three MotoGP races, even though Michelin had the upper hand at Germany with Dani Pedrosa winning. The balance of wins this season is Bridgestone's eight, to Michelin's four.

A senior team member at Ducati said, "Why should we be penalised for winning?" while it is understood that if Repsol Honda and Fiat Yamaha shift from Michelin to Bridgestone, then Michelin may well pull out of the championship after winning every 500cc/MotoGP title since 1994 to date.

Bridgestone confirmed the company wants its rivals to stay in MotoGP, but senior management would not comment on whether Yahama will use Bridgestone next season.

"We don't want Michelin to leave: we don't like the idea of a sole supplier," Hiroshi Yamada, Bridgestone's MotoGP tyre chief, told Gazzetta dello Sport.

"We don't have signed contracts but we want to keep the current teams. We can't and don't want to supply more than the ten riders we have now."

Michelin's director of motorcycle racing Jean-Philippe Weber confirmed his company's will to stay on next year.

"For us too, contracts get signed later on in the season, but we are convinced to keep the current teams. Maybe we'll have a few more riders, however," Weber was quoted as saying by Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Michelin boss also elaborated on the changes he would like to see to the tyre regulations for next year.

"Just some small modifications to the current rules, maybe by slightly increasing the total number of tyres or just the number of rears, allowing testing on the tracks where the race has already been held and organizing tests on the new tracks and on the one fully resurfaced, to avoid making decisions in the dark," said Weber.

Weber further commented on how Michelin is planning to improve next year.

"Our working method hasn't worked. We've already started thinking about 2008 by planning a bigger effort with a bigger budget.

"We must improve our method and gather more data to be transformed into input for our products. Something about that can already be seen with the start up of the Yamaha test team and with the amount of technicians we fielded in the Brno tests."

TYRE TALK WITH MASAO AZUMA, BRIDGESTONE FIELD ENGINEER FOR RIZLA SUZUKI MOTOGP
17.05.2007

TYRE TALK WITH MASAO AZUMA, BRIDGESTONE FIELD ENGINEER FOR RIZLA SUZUKI MOTOGP Masao Azuma is the Bridgestone Field Engineer assigned to the Rizla Suzuki MotoGP team. A former 125cc rider, Azuma competed in eight seasons of the 125cc championship from 1996 to 2003 with a best position of third place in the 1999 Championship. His career tallied an impressive 10 victories and 20 podiums.

“It is a great pleasure for me to be working so closely with the Suzuki MotoGP team as their designated Bridgestone engineer. We have worked very hard together in preparation for the 2007 season. There have been some key changes to the tyre regulations for this season which limit all riders to just 14 fronts and 17 rear tyres per GP weekend. That means that our tyre work with John and Chris is more critical and more individual than ever before. When developing the tyres we have to carefully analyse the data from previous races at each circuit and then take into account that the new 800cc Suzuki GSV-R has different technical characteristics to its 990cc predecessor. With higher cornering speeds from the 800cc bikes, edge grip as well as traction are very important, that means the amount of grip that the rider can extract from the tyre, entering, during and exiting the corners. This determines how well John and Chris can brake into the corner and how quickly they can accelerate out of it and is the key to quick lap times.

Alongside Bridgestone’s race tyre development for 2007, we have also worked a lot on enhancing the performance of our qualifying tyres. The main difference between a race tyre and a qualifying tyre is its grip level and overall durability. Race tyres are designed to perform at optimum level for a race distance of around 120km, whereas a qualifying tyre is intended to last for one quick lap only – approx 5km. Qualifying tyres are much softer than race tyres in order to give the rider some extra grip to create more speed over the one lap that he will have to qualify. Qualifying and race tyres do not appear visually different but the times over one lap can differ by over one second purely because the softer-spec qualifier has higher grip, and its optimum performance is designed to be used for one lap only.

BRIDGESTONE CHIEF ON THIS WEEK'S PHILLIP ISLAND MOTOGP TEST
03.02.2007

Bridgestone continued its extensive pre-season tyre testing with four of its five teams at the technically challenging Phillip Island circuit in Australia this week. Bridgestone Motorsport's Motorcycle Racing Manager, Hiroshi Yamada believes the test was crucial in terms of season-long tyre development and for October's Australian GP.

How did this week's programme differ from the Sepang test last week? "The programme for this week's test was to continue development of our new rear tyres for the 800cc bikes, as well as to work specifically for the Australian GP later in the year. Phillip Island is a technical circuit and quite hard on tyres because we experience higher tyre temperatures than on any other track during the season. We do not get so many opportunities to test at Phillip Island so we must capitalise on our trip every time."

What tyres were tested this week? "We took a wide range of tyres this week, as we did in Sepang, in order to obtain as much data as possible from the eight Bridgestone-shod riders that took part in this test. We took a total of 1,100 tyres including new rear constructions and shapes, as well as qualifying rubber, all of which gave very useful results."

Qualifying was unusually problematic for Bridgestone at Phillip Island last year. Were any improvements found during this week's session? "The major issue which we encountered in last year's Australian GP qualifying was that our one-lap tyres did not retain sufficient grip levels for the entire lap. This forced our riders to conserve their tyre by backing off in less critical sections of the lap in order to keep the grip for the all-important final corner. One of our priorities for this week was to look deeper into this problem. As a general guideline, we expect around one second per lap improvement from race tyre to qualifying tyre, but we are still only seeing 0.5s gain around Phillip Island. We took several qualifying tyres this week and we got some extremely valuable feedback from our teams to resolve the problem for this year's GP."

How was race tyre performance? "Most of our riders conducted long runs on our new rear tyres and we were able to see some impressive lap times during race simulation work. We are still looking into finding the limit which ensures our tyres are at optimum performance for just the right distance. The initial results show lap times on this construction and shape can be quick and consistent, which is encouraging, but our next planned step is to work on the best performance ratio."

Do any of the results from these opening two tests give you cause for concern?

"I am not concerned at all, in fact I have been pleasantly surprised by the performance of our tyres in Sepang and Phillip Island. We have been able to use this week's Australian test to verify initial results from Sepang as we begin to finalise the direction for tyre development for the coming season. We do not conduct tyre tests with our teams assuming that everything is going to yield positive results. Sometimes we can make even more progress by seeing something that does not work as well, so we are grateful for the support our teams give us during this crucial test phase. We have two more teams for this season so we are able to obtain more test data and we hope this will allow us to be more consistently competitive during the season than ever before."

Will the 2007 Bridgestone tyres be the same across all five teams?

"We pride ourselves on providing tyres to each of our teams fairly at all times. A tyre that works well on one bike may not work as well on another so we tailor our service to each team and also to each rider. Data that has been acquired over these winter tests has allowed us to identify areas for individual improvement within each team, whether tuning the tyres to work better with the bike set-up or with the riding style."

Does Bridgestone plan to introduce 16-inch front tyres this season?

"We do not intend to produce 16-inch front tyres for the coming season. We have previously evaluated the possibility of introducing a smaller front tyre, but concluded that the 16.5-inch offers the best performance for our teams, even with the introduction of the 800cc bikes for 2007."

   GOUBERT SPRICHT ÜBER MICHELIN QUALIFIKATIONSREIFEN
08.08.2006
